Caribou are the deer of the north. Shaped by the snows of millenia,
they are completely at home in the country of winter. Theirs are the
lands so recently emerged from beneath the snow and glaciers of the
great ice age: the windswept tundra, the "land of little sticks" where
the stunted trees of the boreal forest cease their northward march...
To most people's view, the country of the caribou is all barren land: harsh, unproductive, devoid of beauty. One of the purposes of these pages is to show that nothing could be further from the truth... With text and photographs by George Calef, this is a work of love by one of Canada's foremost international caribou experts. A wildlife biologist with a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of British Columbia , George Calef has found a devoted following through his work in such eminent national and international nature and wildlife magazines as: Arctic In Colour, Audubon, International Wildlife, National Geographic, Nature Canada, Owl and The Living Wilderness and for his engaging work as an international lecturer on the caribou and their environment. |
