Twenty-Twenty Vision

The first issue of Northern Perspectives was published in January 1973, about 18 months after CARC itself was conceived. In twenty years of publication, Northern Perspectives has dealt with all manner of issues including oil, gas and mineral development, national parks and conservation areas, aboriginal rights, land claims, constitutional development and environmental assessment and has reached out to other circumpolar lands to help us learn from experience elsewhere. Above all, Northern Perspectives has dealt with pressing issues, and promoted public debate about the North.

Northern Perspectives has kept Canadians informed about the plans and proposals of government and industry for the North. It has cajoled and urged the federal government to implement its long-standing policy of balanced northern development, and has articulated the view that the national interest in the North is more than the sum of plans put forward by industry. Started as a newsletter, Northern Perspectives has grown to a well-respected policy journal that is required reading for those interested in Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Northern Perspectives, we have prepared a subject and author index of all past stories and features, and have enclosed it with this issue. Browsing this index reminds us of the authors -- some no longer here -- who have written with eloquence and passion about the North, and who have helped Northern Perspectives address a wide range of issues. To all who, over the years, have contributed to Northern Perspectives as authors, editors and readers, CARC says thank you.
