As members know CARC is fighting hard to persuade governments to conserve and protect the calving grounds of the Porcupine caribou herd. In early December 1995 President Clinton vetoed proposed legislation that would have allowed oil and gas drilling on the Alaskan portion of the calving grounds. This was a vic tory for the Gwich'in Indians and the environmental community in the United States and Canada. In particular, it is a victory for the hundreds of CARC members who wrote to the President.
We have won a battle, but the war is not yet over.
Budget negotiations continue between the Republican
Dominated Congress and the White House. We must
remain vigilant and continually remind the President that
permitting oil and gas exploration on the calving
grounds is not an option.
