Canadian Arctic Resources Committee

Bathurst Inlet  Study Tour July 18 - 25, 2003

CARC invites you to join board, staff and a select group of supporters to journey to Bathurst Inlet this summer, a long, deep inlet just south of Victoria Island on Canada’s Arctic Coast.  At the high season the caribou will be leaving the area of the inlet, after spring calving in June.  The barrenground grizzlies will be feeding, and fish will be plentiful at the river mouth. We will likely see muskox, and an astonishing variety of birds.

Our team will lodge at the Bathurst Inlet Lodge, share in story circles, experience the unspoiled arctic and hear about the potential effects of the proposed mega-project, the Bathurst Inlet Port and Road from experts.  A deep sea port development threatens this delicate and irreplaceable center of mammal and bird migration and reproduction.  Adjoining all weather roads are proposed to resupply the diamond mines to the south and for trucking mineral concentrates to the coast. Tanker-loads of diesel fuel, other petroleum products and mining chemicals will pass through the delicate Northwest Passage, opening now as a result of climate change.
